Belmonte closes on bowling award record

3 minute read

Australia's Jason Belmonte has been named tenpin bowler of the year for a sixth time.

Unstoppable Australian tenpin bowling ace Jason Belmonte has set his sights on a record eighth PBA player of the year award after collecting his sixth.

Despite COVID-19 putting the clamps on sport worldwide, Belmonte topped the US-based PBA 2020 rankings in competition points, scoring average and earnings and captured three PBA titles including two majors to seal the honour.

It means the 37-year-old from Orange, NSW, is on track to catch bowling legend Walter Ray Williams Jnr's tally of seven player of the year awards, having drawn with level with another icon, Earl Anthony, on six.

"If I can be brave and bold, I'd say my goal now is to match Walter Ray's seven and actually make eight," Belmonte said during the streamed award ceremony.

The 2021 PBA Tour resumes with a revamped and expanded PBA Player's Championship mid-January and Belmonte is keen to participate.

"It's not going to be easy next year and it will involve a few extra sacrifices but I'm planning to compete next month and stick around till the season is done. I can't wait to hit the lanes in 2021," he added.
