Scotty James has vowed to regain his mantle with new tricks after falling just short of a record fourth consecutive snowboard halfpipe world championship title when he claimed the silver medal.

The 26-year-old Australian started well, leading Saturday's first round in Aspen, Colorado, after posting a 90.25 run.

However Japanese rival Yuto Totsuka was able to better his score in the second and third round, notching a 96.25 score to claim his first world title.

The world champion in 2015, 2017 and 2019, James was second with 90.50 and Switzerland's Jan Scherrer took bronze with 87.00.

"I did the best I could and today it was second," said James.

"I have learnt a lot of lessons and things I can put into play in my off-season.

"I have got tricks I want to achieve and I'll be back to where I want to be when I do them."

James has the final World Cup event to contest next weekend before he heads into the off-season and continues preparations aimed toward the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
