The Newcastle Cup World Surf League event has been placed on hold for a third straight day with organisers to make their next call on when action will resume on Monday.

Conditions at Merewether Beach have been unsuitable for competition since Thursday, when tour leaders Tyler Wright and John John Florence both set the standard in their opening round heats.

When the men's competition does resume it'll get under way with a mouth-watering elimination heat featuring Australians Owen Wright and Matt Banting and Brazilian former world champion Adriano de Souza.

The women's elimination round starts with Sunshine Coast product Keely Andrew taking on Costa Rica's Brisa Hennessy and American Malia Manuel.

The next call for the event has been scheduled for Monday at 7.15am.
