Australia's Olympic representatives Owen Wright and Julian Wilson have cruised through the elimination round at the Newcastle Cup World Surf League event.

Competition was on hold for four days but the swell picked up on Tuesday at Merewether to allow surfers to get back into action.

Wright's elimination round was first up, also featuring Brazilian Adriano de Souza, and fellow Australian Matt Banting, who was an injury replacement in the competition.

Wright opened with a 5.17 but his best waves came toward the the end of the 30 minute slot when he posted scores of 7.17 and 6.60.

Former world champion de Souza nailed the best score of the round with a 7.33 for a combined 13.66 to also advance, with Banting bowing out.

Wilson dominated his all-Australian elimination round heat, which also featured Mikey Wright, the younger brother of Owen, and tour rookie Jack Robinson.

Wilson had his passage secured after his first two rides while the others tussled until the end, with West Australian Robinson impressing with a 7.07 score to advance.
