Lay day called in WSL's Newcastle Cup

3 minute read

The men's and women's Newcastle Cup is on hold until at least Thursday after officials declared a lay day at Merewether Beach on Wednesday.

A lay day has been declared at Merewether Beach in the World Surf League's Newcastle Cup on Wednesday, delaying the women's quarter finals and men's round of 32.

Competitors had endured four consecutive lay days after Thursday's opener, with Sally Fitzgibbons and Tyler Wright the major women's casualties when surfing resumed on Tuesday.

Olympics-bound Julian Wilson and Owen Wright also progressed from their elimination heats on Tuesday but will need to bide their time until at least Thursday, with conditions set to improve before the weekend.

The Newcastle Cup is the second event on a restructured calendar, three months after the opener in Hawaii and the first of four Australian legs in quick succession.
