Competition at the Tokyo Paralympics starts on Wednesday and here are five must-watch Australian medal hopes.

FIVE AUSTRALIAN MEDAL HOPES AT THE TOKYO PARALYMPICS

ELLIE COLE (Swimming) - Cole is a six-time Paralympic gold medallist, competing at her fourth Games. As with the Olympics, swimming is stacking with Australian medal hopes and Cole will compete on Wednesday in the 400m freestyle, the first of her five events.

CURTIS McGRATH (Canoe) - August 23 was the ninth anniversary of the Australian Army combat engineer stepping on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan, leaving him a double leg amputee. He will defend his Rio canoe gold and also could take out the new kayak class.

STEELERS (Wheelchair rugby) - Australian team co-captain Ryley Batt is one of the Steelers who are aiming for their third-straight Paralympic gold medal. Shae Graham is the first woman to play for the Steelers at a Paralympics.

JARYD CLIFFORD (Athletics) - A growing problem for this visually-impaired runner is finding guides who can keep up with him. He will compete on the track in the 1500m and 5000m. Clifford added the marathon on the last day to his schedule after breaking the world record for his classification.

AMANDA REID (Cycling) - Not just the gold medal favourite in the C2 class for the 500m time trial on the track, but also a trail blazer as an Australian Indigenous elite cyclist. She could break her own world record at the Izu Velodrome.
