Former Australia netball captain Caitlin Bassett has undergone knee surgery, ruling her out of Test matches against New Zealand and England.

The 33-year-old goal shooter chose to play in New Zealand's domestic competition this year in search of more game time but was hampered by injuries to both knees.

The Test centurion still won selection in the Diamonds' 21-strong training squad, with Australia set to face the Silver Ferns in the Constellation Cup in October followed by a three-game series against England.

Bassett tried to manage the injuries but announced her withdrawal from the upcoming internationals on Tuesday after opting for surgery.

"This season was particularly challenging as these injuries inhibited my ability to jump, hold and move like I normally would," Bassett said in a statement.

"I am disappointed not to be available for the upcoming Australian Diamonds Test matches, but this is what's going to be best for my knees and I will turn my focus to the recovery and rehabilitation."

While Bassett won't return to play for Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in 2022 she has yet to announce her playing future, with retirement believed to be an option.
