Canberra back-rower Joe Tapine is set to miss the Raiders' next NRL game as he battles a suspected broken thumb.

Canberra forward Joe Tapine is facing a stint on the NRL sidelines with a suspected broken thumb.

The towering back-rower played just 19 minutes in Friday night's 22-10 defeat to Melbourne at GIO Stadium.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said Tapine will have scans on Saturday to determine the damage.

The 24-year-old has had a horror run with hand injuries after breaking his thumb and finger in separate incidents last year.

"He had a bad thumb last week, he played on and it could be a fracture," Stuart said after the game.

"We lost an international player but that's not an excuse, we have to carry on and move forward and they did that."

The round-two loss to the Storm was a reality check for Canberra after the Raiders' 21-0 thumping of Gold Coast last week.

"There were a couple of little team errors rather than team structure and they're easily fixed," Stuart said.

"There's two of three tries there I think we can fix quickly."

While the Raiders have plenty to work on, Melbourne are looking every bit premiership contenders again.

The Storm stayed undefeated thanks to a fifth career hat-trick from Fijian flyer Suliasi Vunivalu.

The winger had three tries in the first 30 minutes, leaving the Canberra crowd stunned.

"It was great to see Suli score three tries again," Storm coach Craig Bellamy said.

"He had a bit of work to do on at least one of them but there was some great work done on the inside of him before them as well."

Bellamy is failing to get carried away with the result, believing Melbourne needed to work on their discipline.

"It was really disappointing, we gave away a fifth-tackle penalty which basically turned the game," Bellamy said.

"I thought we were pretty much in control and then (the Raiders) scored off that and we had to batten down the hatches."
