St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor believes Sydney Roosters star centre Latrell Mitchell could prove an even bigger threat in the halves on Anzac Day.

McGregor says defence will deliver his men a fifth straight win when they meet the premiers at the SCG on Thursday, but is wary of Mitchell's playmaking abilities.

The Roosters (5-1) are flying but have lost five-eighth Luke Keary to concussion, as 21-year-old sensation Mitchell shifts into the halves.

McGregor declared Mitchell even more dangerous as a playmaker but believes his Dragons defence can shut down the best attack in the competition.

"(Mitchell) is a big body, a very balanced body who gains momentum after contact, and he shows a bully attitude with his defence," McGregor said.

"He's a bit tighter in the ruck this week playing No.6. It's a challenge but when you play against good players you look forward to it.

"Our guys will be looking forward to the challenge in front of them with Latrell because he's been in good form.

"They lose a quality player but bring Latrell closer to the action.

"We know the opposition, they are the premiers and on top of the table but we've played some really good defensive footy in the past month, so we need to make sure we're really good with that again."

McGregor labelled the Anzac Day clash the most watched game of the season (outside of finals) and backed another close contest.

"Three of the past four years it's been won by two points or less so it indicates the rivalry there and the occasion," McGregor said.

"I don't think tomorrow will be any different; a hard-fought contest dominated through the middle third of the field and finished off by your main ball players and skilful backs."

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
