The Manly fan involved in a mid-tunnel incident with Melbourne star Will Chambers at Brookvale has avoided a life ban, but he could still be barred from NRL games for two years.

The NRL on Thursday handed down a preliminary banning notice to the man, after he flung his arm towards Chambers as the Storm centre headed down the players' tunnel after being sinbinned last Saturday.

Under the terms of the provisional ban, it's understood the man will be unable to attend NRL games for two years unless he successfully argues against the punishment.

The penalty comes after Melbourne boss Dave Donaghy called for the supporter to be given a life ban immediately following the incident.

At the time Chambers told those around him he believed the man had tried to strike him.

The man was taken from the ground in handcuffs but released without charge.

It is believed the supporter claimed he was trying to take a photo with Chambers when he stuck his hand through a gap in the fence.

The incident prompted an apology from Manly coach Des Hasler and led to NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg questioning whether Brookvale would retain its right to host finals.

However, Manly are likely to play at the their home ground they finish the regular season in fifth or sixth place this weekend.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
