Cronulla are on the search for what will be their third NRL chief executive in less than a year after parting ways with Richard Munro.

Cronulla are on the hunt for a new NRL chief executive after immediately parting ways with Richard Munro.

The Munro era ends just nine months after the former general manager of The Star was appointed to oversee both Sharks Leagues Club and the football club.

The Sharks now begin the search for what will be their third NRL boss in a year.

"The Sharks thank Mr Munro for his dedication and service during his time at the club," Cronulla said in a statement late on Tuesday.

"The board of directors will make a decision as to a potential replacement and make those announcements in due course."

Munro took the job in April last year as the replacement for Barry Russell, who sensationally resigned following their salary cap dramas.

Cronulla remain $350,000 under the cap for this season as part of the penalties.

The development comes as the NRL side prepares to play in Kogarah this season due to the renovation of its leagues club.

Despite bowing out in week one of the finals last year, the Sharks are expected to remain top-eight contenders in 2020 despite the retirement of Paul Gallen.

Under Munro's leadership, the club re-signed a spate of their current roster, including Chad Townsend, Briton Nikora, and Braden Hamlin-Uele.

Former centre Jesse Ramien makes a controversial return to the club this year, with Cameron King the only other notable addition.

Missing from last year's roster is Jayden Brailey, Kurt Capewell, Kyle Flanagan, Matt Prior, Sosaia Feki, as well as the retired Gallen.
