AJ Brimson has stood out for Gold Coast coach Justin Holbrook during his first NRL pre-season with the Titans.

The 21-year-old is being tipped for a big 2020 as he looks to make the Titans' fullback position his own.

Earmarked as a future Queensland State of Origin player, Brimson was a member of a pre-season camp with the Maroons in Brisbane earlier this month.

Kevin Walters' interest in the youngster is no surprise to Holbrook, who singled out Brimson for praise when assessing who had impressed him since his arrival at the Titans.

"In terms of actual players, I think I'm probably really excited about - AJ Brimson excites me," Holbrook told AAP.

"What he can do on the field and then what he's been doing at training."

With Michael Gordon retired, Brimson will be given a stable run in the No.1 jersey at the Titans this year.

It's a big step for a player whose versatility has been a plus and a hindrance in the formative stages of his career.

Brimson has made 36 appearances for the Titans across the past two seasons, playing at fullback, five-eighth, halfback and as a bench utility.

He'll have his first chance to impress Holbrook on the field this weekend as part of the Titans' squad for the NRL Nines in Perth.

Gold Coast face Canberra and Wests Tigers in their group matches at the pre-season competition.
