Cronulla hooker Cameron King's NRL season could be over after suffering a suspected ACL injury in their pre-season loss to Canterbury in Port Moresby.

King was attempting to pivot out of an attempted tackle in the second half on Saturday when his left knee buckled underneath him.

Playing in his first game back in the NRL since moving to Super League, King screamed in agony before limping off the field with the help of trainers.

The major injury blow rubbed salt in Sharks wounds after their 30-18 defeat.

King was one of just a handful of first-graders tuning up for the season in Papua New Guinea, including Ronaldo Mulitalo, Scott Sorensen and Billy Magoulias.

Most of the Bulldogs' top 17 played, led by Will Hopoate, Dylan Napa, Lachlan Lewis, Aiden Tolman and new faces Joe Stimson and Dean Britt.

Despite their lack of experience, the Sharks appeared headed for victory when a Connor Tracey try gave them a six-point lead in the 50th minute.

However the Bulldogs raced in the final four tries of the match - including three in the space of seven minutes - to steal the win in front of 10,213 fans.

Renouf To'omaga was instrumental in the comeback, scoring the try that gave them the lead in the 71st minute before making a break three minutes later.
