WHAT HAPPENED IN ROUND 16 OF THE NRL

* QUOTE OF THE ROUND: "They're a fair side, we put Ethan Bullemor on, they put Boyd Cordner on," interim Broncos coach Peter Gentle said after his side's 58-12 loss to Sydney Roosters on Friday night.

* STAT THAT MATTERS: Manly's loss to Melbourne effectively rules them out of finals contention. It makes 2020 the first time the club has not played finals under Des Hasler since 2004.

* MAGIC MOMENT: Gold Coast's stunning comeback against St George Illawarra, scoring two tries in eight minutes to get the 14-10 win. Jamal Fogarty's try with three minutes on the clock capped off a wild week for the Titans half.

* MAN OF THE ROUND: James Tedesco is undoubtably the best player in the NRL and showed it again in the Roosters' dismantling of the Broncos. He scored a try, set up five others, ran for 163 metres and had 10 tackle-breaks.

* TALKING POINT: Is South Sydney's season over just as it was starting to click into gear? Losing star fullback Latrell Mitchell for the remainder of the season is a huge blow to the side who finally beat a top four side for the first time on Thursday night.

* JUDICIARY WATCH: St George Illawarra - Jacob Host (dangerous contact); Gold Coast - Sam Lisone (dangerous contact); Brisbane - Joe Ofahengaue (dangerous contact); Parramatta - Reagan Campbell-Gillard (dangerous throw); Newcastle - Pasami Saulo (dangerous contact); North Queensland - Coen Hess (crusher tackle); Melbourne - Christian Welch (dangerous contact); Manly - Jake Trbojevic (crusher tackle); Canberra - Hudson Young (dangerous contact)

* CASUALTY WARD: North Queensland - Michael Morgan (calf); Cronulla - Jesse Ramien (eye), Shaun Johnson (groin); Penrith - Isaah Yeo (concussion); South Sydney - Latrell Mitchell (hamstring); Parramatta - Dylan Brown (ankle); Sydney Roosters - Jake Friend (concussion); Gold Coast - Nathan Peats (calf); Melbourne - Nelson Asofa-Solomona (calf); Marion Seve (ACL); Canberra - Curtis Scott (leg).

* UNDER PRESSURE: Newcastle's 36-6 loss to the Warriors could not have come at a worse time, just four weeks out from the finals. Now sitting in seventh spot on the ladder, their grip on the top eight is loosening. The club hasn't featured in the playoffs since 2013 and now face Cronulla and Sydney Roosters over the next fortnight.
