Queenslander Valentine Holmes will miss the opening State of Origin clash unless he can beat a shoulder charge at the NRL judiciary.

The Cowboys fullback was cited for an 80th-minute hit on Brisbane's Jesse Arthars during their 32-16 win on Thursday.

Deemed a grade-one offence, Holmes faces a one-week ban unless he successfully contests the charge.
