Canterbury are aiming high with their rebuild of the club after it was revealed Phil Gould knocked back a role with the Bulldogs to remain with the Warriors.

Canterbury are on the hunt for a general manager of football after Phil Gould rejected an approach to try to help rebuild the Bulldogs into the powerhouse NRL club it once was.

The ex-Penrith boss confirmed on Twitter on Wednesday he had knocked back an approach from Bulldogs chairman John Khoury last week, opting to remain with the Warriors as a part-time consultant.

Gould was earmarked by the Bulldogs for a similar role to the one he played at the Panthers where he developed the junior pathway systems that have led to Penrith's historic winning streak.

"Bulldogs did approach me some weeks ago regarding a possible role with the club," Gould wrote.

"I informed Bulldogs chairman John Khoury early last week that I could not accept the very kind offer. I'm very committed to my role with @NZWarriors and the long term vision we share. Thank you."

Gould's link to the Bulldogs would have reunited the premiership and Origin winning coach with Trent Barrett after the pair worked together at Penrith.

But since club legend Steve Price left the job at the start of the year, Barrett has been without a general manager of football.

The Bulldogs are in a desperate situation on the field after losing all but one game this season, but links to Gould show they are building something special off the field.

It will come in the way of experienced leaders in support roles working closely with Barrett as the club works a way out of their current situation.

The squad will take a leap in professionalism next season with NSW Origin star Josh Addo-Carr joining the club.

Matt Burton, one of the hottest prospects in the NRL after starring for Penrith this season, has also signed on at the Bulldogs for 2022.

His Panthers teammate Brent Naden, a member of last year's grand final side who has been playing NSW Cup in 2021, will also switch to Canterbury.
