Titans doco sets scene for NRL revival

3 minute read

A four-part documentary detailing Gold Coast's NRL struggles and their efforts during the 2021 pre-season to end their finals drought will be aired from Monday.

Gold Coast's efforts to regain NRL credibility will be exposed in a documentary set to be aired from Monday.

The candid four-part Building Titans series is filmed during the 2021 pre-season and leans on historical footage and interviews to detail the Titans' on-field mediocrity and off-field scandals since entering the league in 2007.

The Titans finished third and fourth in the 2009 and 2010 regular seasons but have finished no higher than eighth since, notching two wooden spoons along the way.

A club record 14-game losing streak across 2019 and 2020 saw the Titans in free fall and for the second time on the brink of extinction - footage capturing the moment incoming CEO Steve Mitchell was asked how the club would stop being viewed as a "laughing stock".

But, under new coach Justin Holbrook, they won their last five games of the 2020 season to finish ninth in a promising start to a chapter Titans chairman Dennis Watt described as the club's "last stand".

The arrivals of key recruits Tino Faasuamaleaui and David Fifita are a focus.

Faasuamaleaui taking cameras through his tiny home town of Widgee as he emotionally explains his reason for leaving Melbourne.

Titans legend Preston Campbell is also featured as he makes an official return to the club's staff in 2021 and his son Jayden pushes for an NRL debut.

The documentary sets the scene for the Titans' long-awaited return to the NRL finals with Holbrook confident but wary.

"The salary cap ... makes all 16 teams think they can fit in the top eight," he says.

"It's so difficult to give an outcome, but we're obviously stronger than what we were ... I'm excited about what's possible, as for what is, I'm not sure but I'm looking forward to it."

Episodes one and two will be broadcast on Fox Sports and Kayo on Monday night with parts three and four to come on Tuesday night.
