Former South Sydney powerhouse George Burgess will return to the NRL in 2022 after signing a two-year deal with St George Illawarra.

The 2014 premiership winner has been without a club since February after being released by English Super League outfit Wigan after undergoing hip surgery.

An English international who made 149 appearances for the Rabbitohs in eight seasons, Burgess joins the Dragons until at least the end of the 2023 campaign.

"Our medical staff have already commenced working with George on his rehabilitation," Dragons football manager Ben Haran said.

"Everyone is committed to helping George get back to his fighting best ahead of the 2022 season, but no person more than George himself."

Burgess is the third key forward set to join the Dragons next year with Queensland State of Origin representatives Francis Molo and Jaydn Su'A having also committed to the Red V.

The Dragons, who sacked former NSW Origin prop Paul Vaughan in July after his infamous barbecue that breached state public health orders and led to multiple players being suspended, are reportedly poised to sign Moses Mbye if the utility can receive an early release from Wests Tigers.
