Leading Australians Angus Gardner and Nic Berry have been selected as referees for the Rugby World Cup tournament in Japan later this year.

The pair are the the first Australian-born refs since 2007 to officiate at the quadrennial tournament.

It is also the first time since 2003 that more than one Australian has been selected to referee at a Rugby World Cup.

It's Gardner's second World Cup, having been an assistant referee in 2015 while former Queensland Reds halfback Berry will make his World Cup debut.

Berry has risen quickly through the ranks since officiating at his first Super Rugby match in 2016.

Gardner and Berry will be part of a 23-man referee team that will officiate the 48 games at rugby's flagship event.
