Australia's Wallaroos have launched their international season with a 34-5 win over Japan thanks to a dominant second-half display in Newcastle.

A quartet of tries after the break inflated Australia's winning margin in the first of two Tests after they originally struggled in blustery conditions on Saturday.

Debutants Averyl Mitchell, Ariana Hira-Herangi and Eva Karpani all had memorable starts to their Wallaroos' careers with tries as Australia steadily exerted control at the No.2 Sportsground.

Captain Grace Hamilton and fellow loose forward Millie Boyle were also prominent after hooker Mitchell and centre Hira-Herangi gave the Wallaroos a 12-0 buffer at halftime.

Five-eighth Trileen Pomare crossed two minutes after the restart while winger Mhicca Carter, prop Karpani and winger Sam Traherne completed the rout.

Maiko Fujimoto managed a consolation try for the visitors.

The second Test is on Friday at North Sydney Oval.
