3 minute read

Australia have made a winning start to the Dubai Rugby Sevens, with the men beating Scotland and the women defeating Fiji.

The Australian men's and women's sevens teams have beaten Scotland and Fiji respectively in the first round of the Dubai Rugby Sevens.

The Dubai tournament is the opening round of the world rugby sevens series for the men's team and the second round for the women's team.

The Aussie men's team finished as the day's top scorers, with seven tries in a 43-14 win over Scotland.

Joe Pincus (two), Josh Coward, debutant Josh Turner, Jeral Skelton, Nick Malouf and Henry Hutchison scored the tries on Thursday as the Aussies made a winning start to the tournament in Pool B.

Sprinter-turned-footballer Trae Williams, who has been hailed as the fastest man in the sport, also made his debut in the second half, making one crucial tackle on Scotland's Alex Coombes to prevent a try.

Tim Walsh's team face Ireland, who lost 24-19 to the USA, in their second pool match on Friday.

The women's sevens team has also recorded an emphatic 38-0 victory over Fiji, with teenagers Georgia Hannaway and Faith Nathan scoring on debut.

Ellia Green scored Australia's first try but later limped off with an injury before halftime.

Emma Tonegato scored two tries, with Sharni Williams also getting in on the act as John Manenti's team started their Pool B campaign with a comfortable victory.

Next up for the women's team is a match against Ireland, who lost 12-10 to Spain in their opening pool match.
