Australia's women's team have marched into the quarter-finals of the Cape Town Sevens, but the men missed out on progression to the knockout stages.

The women topped their group following a 19-14 win in Saturday's Pool C decider over the United States, thanks to a last-gasp Emma Tonegato try ensuring their first victory over the Eagles in the Rugby Sevens World Series this season.

The Olympic champions will now play Fiji in the last eight, with the winners facing either Russia or France in the last four.

Australian's men's side, meanwhile, ran in four tries to beat Samoa in their final Pool D match, but it was not enough to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

The win followed their earlier error-strewn 12-7 defeat against Kenya, which meant they would always be facing an uphill battle to get out of the pool.
