Australian women's rugby kicks off again

3 minute read

Rugby Australia has announced a women's domestic rugby competition kicks off next month as it looks to get the national team, the Wallaroos, up and running.

Rugby Australia has announced women's rugby will return next month as it looks to resurrect its international program in 2021.

Unable to play any Test matches this year due to the constraints of COVID-19, the matches will also be used as a trial for a Wallaroos camp planned for December in Canberra.

Six teams representing SW Rugby, ACT Rugby and Queensland Rugby will play next month, with up to 30 Wallaroos in action across the sides.

As well as the ACT side there is Sydney Gold, Sydney Blue and NSW Country Women's, as well two Queensland outfits.

Canberra Women's Presidents XVs against Sydney Blue opens play in Sydney on November 7.

The Wallaroos are hoping to play 10 Test matches in 2021, including the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand next September.

"Whilst we were disappointed the seven planned Test matches for the Buildcorp Wallaroos couldn't go ahead this year due to COVID-19, it's fantastic to receive the green light for this action-packed domestic competition," said RA general manager of women's rugby Jilly Collins.

"With less than a year to go until the Rugby World Cup 2021 it's important that our top players have opportunities to compete in quality competitions."
