Phoenix sign two more for A-League

3 minute read

Wellington Phoenix have continued their player-signing splurge by snaring Victorian NPL defender Reuben Way and a Kiwi age-group star.

Wellington Phoenix have signed two players on opposite sides of the field and at contrasting points of their careers before the A-League gets underway.

Experienced Australian fullback Reuben Way and 19-year-old Kiwi midfielder Callan Elliot have earned contracts as coach Mark Rudan continued a busy period of signings.

The Kiwi outfit bolstered its midfield last week with the addition of Australian attacker Max Burgess and Spanish holding player Mandi.

Way, 28, has been a left-sided player with Victorian NPL club Heidelberg United FC.

He said he was shocked when Rudan made contact, having shelved his professional dreams five years ago.

Scottish-born Kiwi age-group international Elliot is a protege of former Phoenix great Paul Ifill.

He fills the club's third and final youth spot alongside Sarpreet Singh and Liberato Cacace.

Rudan says he still has money to spend but is tempted to hold fire until the January transfer window.

The Phoenix, rated competition outsiders by bookmakers, host the Newcastle Jets on Sunday.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
