Captain Brendan Hamill has opted not to stay at Western Sydney Wanderers and will be joining another A-League club.

Earlier this month the Wanderers started a clear-out of the squad after failing to make the finals for a second straight season after an eight-placed finish.

They announced the departure of 11 players, including four of their five imports.

Hamill joined the club during the club's 2014 AFC Champions League campaign, where he made his debut against Chinese giants Guangzhou Evergrande.

He started in both legs of the Champions League final that season, when Wanderers became the first, and so far only, Australian club, to win that prestigious trophy.

Hamill brought up his 100th appearance just before the end of the season, finishing on 103 games.

Playing as a centre back, 26-year-old Hamill captained the club this season, tallying 24 A-League games in 2018-19,

"Brendan has been nothing short of exceptional for this club, both as a player and person," Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said.

"He will forever be associated with a successful part of this club's history and we wish him every success in the next part of his journey."

Hamill has been linked with new Victorian club Western United, who will join the league next season.

He thanked the Wanderers' supporters for their "undying passion" and wished the club nothing but the best for the future.

"It's been an absolute privilege to represent this club, my home town where I was raised, for the last five seasons," Hamill said.

"Not a day has passed that I've ever taken it granted."
