Wellington's Singh on verge of Bayern deal

3 minute read

Wellington Phoenix playmaker Sarpreet Singh is reportedly on the verge of signing with German giants Bayern Munich in a landmark deal for New Zealand soccer.

German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are poised to announce the shock signing of Wellington Phoenix attacking midfielder Sarpreet Singh.

Various media reports in Germany say 20-year-old playmaker is in Munich and set to become the first Kiwi to sign with one of the giant clubs of Europe.

Singh's bright performances for New Zealand at the recent U-20 World Cup in Poland are believed to have attracted the attention of Bundesliga champions. The Kiwis were eliminated by Colombia on penalties in the round of 16.

Reports say rising A-League star Singh would link with Bayern's reserve team initially, with an eye to eventual promotion to the first team.

It would be a giant leap for the skilled Auckland-born attacker of Indian descent, who has played 38 games for the Phoenix across three seasons, registering nine goals and seven assists.

He excelled in patches during the most recent campaign under Mark Rudan but a lack of form resulted in his benching for their elimination final loss to Melbourne City.
