Melbourne Victory have taken just four points from their first four A-League games but midfielder Leigh Broxham is confident they can turn things around.

Melbourne Victory stalwart Leigh Broxham says the A-League side can rectify their poor opening to the season but must start "putting runs on the board" beginning with Sunday's clash with Wellington.

Victory have just four points from their first four games and collapsed after being 2-0 up against Western United to lose 3-2 on Saturday night but have a chance to make amends against the winless Phoenix.

"We've got another home game ... so it's a home game that you want to send a clear message that we're not mucking around and we are Melbourne Victory and we want to be at the top end every year," Broxham said on Wednesday.

"And you can only go so far with excuses, I think. We need to start putting runs on the board and that's what we'll be looking to do."

Broxham said Victory's focus had turned to fixing simple issues after conceding "avoidable" goals against United.

"It was just a few little things, a few little individual mistakes that you can get rid of," he said.

"It was a derby as well and there were some contests and some things that we could compete a little bit better throughout the game to be honest - which are easily fixed."

Broxham said overall he wasn't concerned about the slow start to the season.

"We've started poorly other years and we've been okay," he said.

"And being around the dressing room it's fine, everyone's okay, everyone's up and about and it's a good group of guys.

"So it's the right mix of obviously not happy about the loss but how far do you go? If you're gonna be so far down about it then you do start affecting your confidence.

"You need to accept what's happened and accept that it wasn't good enough and you have to get up because we've got a game where we can send a message and get a reaction."
