Sydney FC captain and veteran defender Alex Wilkinson will stay with the Sky Blues until at least the end of their 2020-21 campaign after signing a one-year contract extension.

The 35-year-old centre-back, who is in his fourth year at Sydney, took over the captaincy this season after Alex Brosque retired at the end of 2018-19.

Wilkinson, who has won 16 Socceroo caps, has started all six of Sydney's games this season.

He's a two-time A-League championship and premiership winner with the Sky Blues and also played in a triumphant FFA Cup team.

Wilkinson is set to enter the list of top 10 appearance-makers at the club with this new deal, logged 111 games across all competitions.

"I'm thrilled to be re-signing with a club that has given me so much over the last four years," Wilkinson said.

"I've enjoyed some of my best football at Sydney FC and I'm eager for that to continue along with all the success we've had"

He joins fellow Socceroo Ryan McGowan in committing to the Sky Blues until at least the end of next season.

"To have our central defensive pairing locked in for season 2020-21 is a massive win and areal positive for the club," Sydney coach Steve Corica said.

"Alex has been an exceptional leader and his experience has proven invaluable across all levels at Sydney FC."
