Jets veteran signs on for two more years

Newcastle's most capped player in A-League history, Ben Kantarovski, has re-signed with the club for another two years.

Ben Kantarovski, the most-capped player in Newcastle Jets history, has re-signed with the A-League club for another two seasons.

Newcastle on Thursday announced the 27-year-old would remain until the 2021-22 season, which could take him past the 250-game mark.

A proud local who has been part of the club since he was 15, Kantarovski is determined to help return to the finals after missing the playoffs last season.

"We've got a really good crew here in Newcastle, there's a real togetherness in this squad and it's a good place to be," Kantarovski said.

"The team is a strong one, and I'm keen to just get my head down and work hard on helping to get us back into the finals."

Jets coach Ernie Merrick said it is a significant extension for a club, highlighting Kantarovski's development into a leader of their squad.

The midfielder has made seven appearances so far this season, including being a part of the run-on side for the past month.

"His influence on the players around him is clear and his ability to control the centre of the pitch is outstanding," Merrick said.

"Ben is an important player for us off the pitch as well, his influence in the sheds is enormous and I'm confident that he'll only continue to grow in that aspect."
