Former Socceroos forward Scott McDonald has finalised his switch to Brisbane Roar after an unhappy stint with Western United.

The 36-year-old was trumpeted as one of United's key signings ahead of their maiden A-League campaign, but scored one goal in only nine appearances.

After a long process to receive a release from his contract, McDonald has joined the Roar on an 18-month deal.

"More than anything, I'm just looking forward to getting out there and showing the Brisbane Roar fans what I can do," McDonald said.

"I want to win and hopefully I can be a really influence on the younger boys - that's what I strived to do at previous clubs and it's something I really enjoy."

A prolific striker at club level, McDonald made 26 appearances for the Socceroos but failed to find the back of the net for Australia.

It's understood McDonald will be immediately available for the Roar and could even debut in Saturday's home match against Wellington Phoenix.

Roar coach Robbie Fowler's pedigree as a former Liverpool and England striker is understood to have played a large part in luring McDonald to the club.

Fowler believes McDonald's experience will be a valuable asset as the Roar attempt to get in the hunt for the A-League finals in the back half of the season.

"Scott's record speaks for itself - he's had a tremendous and successful career at some big clubs, in top leagues, and with the national team," Fowler said.

"He certainly brings with him a wealth of experience which can only be beneficial for his teammates, especially our young, up-and-coming players who I'm sure will be able to learn plenty from him."

McDonald is the second new face at the Roar, after defender Corey Brown returned to the club he left in 2018 following his release from Melbourne Victory on Friday.
