Midfielder Stefan Mauk has ended a troubled A-League stint with Brisbane Roar to rejoin hometown club Adelaide United.

The ex-Australian under-23 representative was a member of the Reds' A-League championship-winning side in 2016 before moving to Dutch club NEC Nijmegen.

After struggling for game time in Holland, Mauk returned to Australia on loan with Melbourne City before joining the Roar ahead of the 2018-19 season.

His time in Brisbane was wrecked by injury, making just four appearances including a memorable game against Adelaide where he was issued a red card while lying unconscious.

Mauk regained fitness but fell out of favour under new Roar coach Robbie Fowler in recent weeks.

The 24-year-old says he is pleased to return to Adelaide as he looks to reignite his career.

"I spent my childhood dreaming of representing my hometown club and to get the chance to do that again is a great feeling," he said.

"In 2016 we were able to achieve something really special by winning the double and those memories will always have a special place in my heart.

"Obviously the club's experienced quite a bit of success since then with two FFA Cups but I want to add to that success and keep propelling this team forward."
