The bad news was that Newcastle couldn't find the back of the net despite having the most shots in a game of any A-League team this season.

The good news is that they're about to unleash guys who can.

In a sorely-needed boost of firepower for next week's derby with Central Coast, Roy O'Donovan and Wes Hoolahan could both be suiting up for the Jets.

O'Donovan re-joins the club after being released by Brisbane Roar, while Hoolahan is on the cusp of his league debut following an ankle injury.

"Wes comes with a fair bit of confidence about himself being an experienced player, and Roy's the same," caretaker coach Craig Dean said.

"They know themselves, they know the game. They're confidence players, and they'll certainly add that to the team.

"Their quality as players is already there for everyone to see. Wes at home in England, and Roy's record here over the last three-four years, has been very good.

"So I look forward to having the opportunity to look at both of them in next week's game. We just want to continue on with the performances we've putting in.

"We just need to win the game."

O'Donovan comes back to the Hunter after making just 12 appearances under coach Robbie Fowler, scoring six goals.

The 34-year-old Irishman joined the Roar after two seasons in Newcastle, where he netted 20 times in 33 matches under former coach Ernie Merrick.

"Yeah look, it's a bit of a flat ending really. Short but sweet spell there," O'Donovan told Fox Sports of his time at Brisbane.

"From where I'm standing, I gave it my best shot. I tried to score goals, tried to lead the troops, it's a shame it got cut short. But it is what it is.

"I'm a big believer in faith and I get my chance now back at Newcastle Jets again."

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
