Melbourne City's Scottish defender Jack Hendry was undergoing knee surgery for a torn medial collateral ligament on Tuesday but is expected to return later in the A-League season.

Hendry, making just his second appearance on loan from Scottish club Celtic, sustained the injury in the last 10 seconds of the weekend's 3-1 A-League defeat by Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium.

The 24-year-old, capped three times by Scotland, caught his right knee in the turf while challenging for the ball with Adelaide's Riley McGree.

He played out the final seconds of the match but the club confirmed on Tuesday he was set for a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

"Scans on Monday revealed the Celtic loanee had fully ruptured the ligament," a club statement said.

"The defender will go under the knife on Tuesday as he looks to complete his recovery at CFA Melbourne and make a return in the latter stages of the season."
