Melbourne Victory have signed experienced English midfielder Jacob Butterfield ahead of the upcoming A-League season.

Butterfield is Victory's second foreign signing this off-season after winger Callum McManaman joined earlier this month.

The 30-year-old joins the A-League club after racking up almost 350 games in England's Championship at the likes of Barnsley, Middlesbrough, Crystal Palace, Derby County and, most recently, Luton Town.

"Jacob is another strong addition to our playing group. He is a good age and brings a wealth of experience having played in the Championship for a number of big clubs," Victory coach Grant Brebner said.

"He is known for working extremely hard box-to-box, he has a presence on the ball and is also a proven goal scorer.

"We are looking to build on the foundations we established at the end of last season."

Butterfield is set to arrive in Melbourne in the coming weeks.

The A-League season kicks off on December 27 and Victory are attempting to propel themselves back up the table after a horror 10th-place finish last season.
