Socceroos midfielder Jackson Irvine is reportedly set to sign for Scottish club Hibernian, ending a six-month wait to find a new club.

Jackson Irvine's six-month wait to find a new club appears close to ending with Scottish top-flight side Hibernian linked to the Socceroos midfielder.

Irvine was released in July last year by English club Hull City before the resumption of the 2019-20 season that was interrupted by COVID-19, and has been without a team since then.

Reports, however, claim Hibernian manager Jack Ross is moving to land Irvine on a free transfer as they chase a top-four finish in the Scottish Premiership.

A return to Scotland would be a welcome relief for Irvine, who came through the youth ranks at giants Celtic before spells at Kilmarnock and Ross County.

Irvine was part of the Ross County team which defeated Hibs to win the 2016 Scottish League Cup before making a move south to England to join Burton Albion.

The 27-year-old went on to join Hull in 2017 and became the club's captain at the start of 2020 but hasn't played a match of football since the pandemic shut down England's professional leagues last March.

HIbernian are no strangers to Socceroos talent with ex-captain Mark Milligan and striker Jamie Maclaren having appeared for the Edinburgh-based club in recent seasons.

Scottish-born Socceroos winger Martin Boyle is part of the squad at Easter Road.

Meanwhile, Mat Ryan has again been overlooked by English club Brighton & Hove Albion for the Seagulls' FA Cup match against Newport County.

Ryan wasn't even in the matchday squad for the Premier League team's match against the League Two club, with Brighton advancing to the fourth round 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

The Socceroos goalkeeper last appeared for Graham Potter's team in a 3-0 Premier League loss to Leicester in mid-December and despite declaring he wants to fight for his place a move away during the January transfer window is looking increasingly likely.
