Melbourne Victory have jumped back into the W-League top four with a win over Newcastle as the competition's finals race heats up.

Melbourne Victory have snuck back into the W-League top four, with Melina Ayres' brace securing a 4-2 win over a spirited Newcastle Jets.

Victory snatched the lead in Morwell when Ayres drove a cracking strike into the top corner in the 13th minute, then doubled their lead via New Zealand international Claudia Bunge's 41st-minute header.

Then, in the 42nd minute, Catherine Zimmerman slipped a clever ball through to Kyra Cooney-Cross, who drilled a low finish past Jets custodian Nicole Simonsen.

Jets star Tara Andrews pulled a goal back in the 48th minute, lashing home after Victory defender Kayla Morrison failed to clear an aerial ball.

Newcastle snared another in the 76th when Tessa Tamplin put a ball over the top for Rhianna Pollicina, who casually chipped Victory goalkeeper Gaby Garton.

But in the 81st minute, Ayres took the wind out of Newcastle's sails when she skipped into the 18-yard box and finished on her left.

The result put Victory fourth on goal difference behind Brisbane and ahead of Adelaide, with all three teams on 10 points.

Earlier on Sunday, Adelaide spurned their chance to edge ahead in the top-four race, twice dropping a lead in a 2-2 draw with Western Sydney - with 17-year-old Wanderer Sarah Hunter scoring a brace.

Adelaide's Chelsea Dawber opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, getting on the end of Mallory Weber's ball over the top and coolly finishing.

The Wanderers responded 10 minutes later when Georgia Yeoman-Dale burst down the left flank and cut the ball back for Hunter to bury her first league goal.

Adelaide skipper Dylan Holmes restored the lead when she chested down an aerial ball and smashed home a shot in the 71st minute.

But seven minutes later, Hunter scrambled home her second to snare the Wanderers a point.

On Thursday night, Sydney FC all but ended Melbourne City's finals hopes with a 2-0 win at AAMI Park.

In-form striker Remy Siemsen opened the scoring in the 51st minute, with City defender Tyla-Jay Vlajnic receiving a straight red card four minutes later.

Natalie Tobin sealed the result when she headed home in the 75th minute.

Sydney FC and Canberra United will face off in a top-of-the-table clash on Monday evening.
