Three days after they return to action in a blockbuster clash with Germany, the Matildas will back up against the Netherlands.

The Matildas will play two games against top opposition in the space of four days after locking in a clash with the Netherlands next month.

The Matildas had already secured a match against world No.2 Germany in Wiesbaden on April 11 - their first under new coach Tony Gustavsson - and will back up against the 2019 Women's World Cup finalists and world No.4 on April 14 at NEC Stadium, Nijmegen.

Both matches serve as important preparation for the Matildas ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, which are due to start in July - with the Netherlands game just a week out from the tournament draw on April 21 in Zurich.

"To secure two world-class opponents for April speaks to the level of respect the Matildas have earned over the years and the commitment of the federation to ensure we have quality preparation," Gustavsson said.

"These matches will be important tests for us as a team looking to build towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games but also an opportunity to assess players on many levels."

"With the quality present in their teams, Germany and the Netherlands will challenge us in both attack and defence.

"However, the coaching staff and I are eager to see what we can learn about our team and set a platform for the coming months."

"Testing ourselves early is important for our progression as a team and this international football schedule provides the chance to see how we can plot a path forward so we are best prepared ahead of Tokyo."

Australia last played the Netherlands in June 2019, when they lost 3-0 in the build-up to their Women's World Cup campaign.

The Matildas are ranked seventh in the world but haven't been in action since qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics in March last year.

Australian-based players will not be eligible for squad selection for the April FIFA window.
