Fan favourite quits Wanderers, joins City

3 minute read

Western Sydney fans' favourite Daniel Georgievski has left the Wanderers, joining A-League rivals Melbourne City for the remainder of the 2020-21 season.

Western Sydney have lost a fans' favourite with defender Daniel Georgievski leaving the club to join Melbourne City for the remainder of the A-League season.

The Blacktown-born 33-year-old joined his hometown club in 2019 after stints in Croatia, Romania and in the A-League with Melbourne Victory and Newcastle Jets.

He won the A-League grand final in 2015 with Victory and was named the Joe Marston medallist after the 2017 grand final won by Sydney FC on penalties over Victory.

Capped 22 times by Macedonia, Georgievski was a hit with Wanderers' fans, making 23 appearances in his debut campaign for Western Sydney in 2019.

The veteran was however frozen out under coach Carl Robinson, making just three appearances under the Welshman and last playing in a 2-0 win over Victory in February.

Georgievski will join league leaders City as an injury replacement for Olyroo Nathaniel Atkinson, who has been sidelined with a hamstring complaint suffered in a round 15 win over Wellington.

"Daniel can play both sides of defence and he's played many years in the A-League which brings lots of experience to our squad," City director of football Michael Petrillo said.

"He'll be a short-term injury replacement while Nathaniel is injured and there's also the possibility to add him to our Asian Champions League squad."
