Experienced defender Steven Taylor has vowed to return Wellington Phoenix to finals football after re-signing with the A-League club for next season.

The Englishman made a mid-season move back to the Phoenix after a stint in the Indian Super League, giving Ufuk Talay's side much-needed defensive fortitude in his 11 appearances.

While the Phoenix fell just short of the top six, they were unbeaten in all eight games (four wins, four draws) where Taylor started and played the full 90 minutes.

"Coming back (to the Phoenix) was a no-brainer for me, I want to be around these guys again so I'm delighted to be here next season," Taylor said.

"... I don't want the Phoenix to be on the fringes of the play-offs every season; I want us to be guaranteed in the top six and challenging for the top two, so that's my goal and the club's goal for next season."

Taylor, 35, is the latest key Phoenix player to re-sign along with Ben Waine, Oliver Sail and Clayton Lewis though Ulises Davila is expected to depart for Macarthur FC.

"(Taylor) is a leader for us first and foremost; he brings us that experience, determination and passion on the field that helps everyone on the squad to lift their games," said Talay, himself committing to another two seasons.

"He's someone we know we can rely on to bring it 100 per cent every match and solidify our backline - our defence and decision-making is simply better when he plays.

"Retaining Taylor is key for us going forward so I'm happy to see him return to the Phoenix next season and I know the fans will be happy to see him back."
