Matildas captain Sam Kerr has received further recognition for her stunning year for club and country, finishing second in the International Federation of Football History Player of the Year Awards.

Kerr was behind only Barcelona superstar Alexia Putellas, with votes counted from more than 90 countries. United States midfielder Sam Mewis finished third.

The Matildas star previously finished third behind Putellas and Barcelona forward Jenni Hermoso in the Ballon d'Or.

Kerr scored 21 goals in the English Women's Super League last season to land the Golden Boot and then six for Australia at the Tokyo Games.

She leads the current WSL top scorers' list with nine goals and three assists from eight games so far this season.

Kerr was player of the match in Sunday's Women's FA Cup final, scoring two goals, including a delightful chip, in Chelsea's 3-0 win over Arsenal.

"So many wondered how Sam would cope in the English game. As far as I am concerned she is the best striker in the world," Chelsea coach Emma Hayes said after the final.

"She is courageous, she is full of confidence. She's a superb athlete and an amazing human."

The IFFHS named Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski as the male player of the year with Lionel Messi (PSG) runner-up.
