The Matildas will return to action for the first time since their Tokyo Olympics campaign in a friendly match against the Republic of Ireland in the September FIFA window.

Australia finished fourth - its best result at a Women's World Cup or Olympics - in Tokyo after losing the bronze medal match to the United States on August 5.

The Matildas, currently ranked No.11 in the world, will play the Republic of Ireland (No.33) for the first time at Dublin's Tallaght Stadium, with kick-off at 4am on September 22 (AEST).

"Every time we play an international match, it is an opportunity for this team to reinforce our foundations and truly become one day better," coach Tony Gustavsson said in a statement.

"We made a lot of positive strides in our last assembly, and I can't wait to come together once again.

"The last couple of years have demonstrated the impressive growth of women's football internationally and that every nation presents a different challenge that we can learn from.

"It's vital that we continue to focus on our own progression as a team and every match is key to that mission."

Football Australia also confirmed it was in ongoing discussions with the federal government and state governments, with hopes of securing the Matildas' remaining fixtures in 2021, in later international breaks, on home soil.

The Matildas last played in Australia during their Olympic qualifiers in March 2020.
