FFA Cup round of 16 to start in Adelaide

3 minute read

Border closures have wreaked havoc with the FFA Cup but the round of 16 is ready to kick off in Adelaide.

The first two matches of the FFA Cup round of 16 have been locked in with games to be played in South Australia and Queensland.

Three-time FFA Cup Winners Adelaide United will face South Australian opposition for the first time in the competition's history, coming up against National Premier Leagues SA side Adelaide Olympic this Sunday.

Olympic qualified for the round of 16 for the second time in their history when they beat ECU Joondalup 3-0 in Perth last month.

ECU Joondalup had a tumultuous lead-up to the game after their star striker Danny Hodgson underwent emergency brain surgery last month following an alleged unprovoked attack while at a Perth train station.

Hodgson remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Adelaide United needed extra time to defeat West Australian side Floreat Athena.

The two Adelaide-based sides will meet this Sunday at VALO Sports Centre.

The other fixture will be an all-Queensland clash between Lions FC and Brisbane Roar, with the winner to progress to the quarter-finals.

Lions FC reached the next round with a resounding win over Football Northern Territory's Casuarina FC, while Brisbane Roar defeated local side Peninsula Power in the opening match of the 2021 Round of 32.

The October 24 match will be played at Lions FC Stadium.

Although the round of 16 will begin this weekend, the round of 32 isn't even close to being completed due to the various border restrictions that exist.

Football Australia is aiming to be in a position to confirm match details for the remaining round of 32 fixtures in the coming weeks.

Perth Glory's play-off clash with Melbourne Victory for a spot in the round of 32, and Western United's match against Newcastle, are among the games yet to be locked in.
