Brisbane Roar coach Warren Moon says everyone at the A-League Men club is proud midfielder Rahmat Akbari has earned a call-up for Afghanistan's national team.
He's set to lose a regular member of his A-League Men line-up but Brisbane Roar coach Warren Moon couldn't be happier that Rahmat Akbari has accepted a call-up from Afghanistan.
Akbari marked his recent national team selection with just his second ALM career goal in Brisbane's 2-1 win over Wellington on Saturday.
The 21-year-old's call-up means he'll head to Turkey for a training camp, which will include a friendly against Madagascar.
It will make Akbari unavailable for the Roar's ALM matches against Perth Glory, Melbourne City and Western United.
"Rahmat is an exceptional young talent and we're very proud of him as a club," Moon said.
"It's obviously a national team call-up and there's a lot going on in that part of the world and we've supported Rahmat during this time, knowing it's not easy for him, knowing he's got family back there.
"It's a really proud moment for him and a tough decision but he goes with our blessing and we hope he does well."
Born in Afghanistan, Akbari and his family moved to Australia when he was five.
An Australian under-17 representative, Akbari would still be eligible for the green and gold despite the Afghanistan call-up unless he goes on to represent the central Asian nation in a FIFA-sanctioned tournament.
