Early WTA exit for Sharma in Luxembourg

Australian interest at the WTA's Luxembourg Open is over with Astra Sharma suffering a first-round loss to Danish teenager Clara Tauson.

Astra Sharma has been beaten in straight sets by teenager Clara Tauson in the first round of the WTA's Luxembourg Open.

Australia's only player in the WTA Tour 250 event, Sharma was unable to capitalise on three break points in a 6-2 6-2 loss to Danish 18-year-old Tauson.

World No.112 Sharma, who won her first main tour event in Charleston in April, had her serve broken twice in each set by 70th-ranked Tauson - who lost to Ash Barty in the US Open second round earlier this month.

In other opening round matches on the hardcourts in Kockelscheuer, 2015 champion Misaki Doi of Japan was was beaten 6-2 6-3 by Russian seventh seed Ludmilla Samsonova.

Fourth-seeded Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova overcame Stefanie Voegele 6-1 3-6 6-3, while French eighth seed Alize Cornet defeated Anastasia Potapova 6-4 6-2.

Croatian Jana Fett beat Ekaterina Makarova 6-3 6-3 while Oceane Dodin progressed with a 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-3 victory over Anastasia Zakharova.
