Former world No.1 Venus Williams has been forced to pull out of the Brisbane International following a setback in training.

The 10-time grand slam winner - now ranked No.52 - had been given a wildcard for the tournament starting on January 3.

Organisers say a wildcard replacement will be named on Thursday.

Williams, 39, still hopes to contest the Adelaide International from January 11-18.

"Unfortunately I won't be starting my season in Brisbane due to an unexpected setback during my training," she said in a statement on Wednesday.

"I look forward to being in Australia in the New Year and will see everyone at Adelaide."
