PLAYER OF THE DAY: Alexei Popyrin - Australia's 21-year-old former French Open junior champion saved four match points to send No.13 seed David Goffin packing with a rousing 3-6 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 win over the Belgian.

STAT OF THE DAY: At 17 and already likened to Rafael Nadal, Spanish prodigy Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest man to win a grand-slam match since Thanasi Kokkinakis at the 2014 Australian Open.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "The biggest impact for me personally has been not being able to have fresh air - it really took a toll for me to adjust," former world No.1 and two-time Open champion Victoria Azarenka after bombing out in the first round following 14 days in hard quarantine.

TOURNAMENT SUMMARY: With Samantha Stosur playing Destanee Aiava in a battle of the generations, Australia is assured of at least nine players in the second round after Popyrin joined Alex de Minaur, Chris O'Connell and first-day winners Nick Kyrgios, Bernard Tomic, Alex Bolt, James Duckworth and Ajla Tomljanovic. Nadal, Russian seeds Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev and women's big guns Elina Svitolina, Belinda Bencic and Garbine Muguruza also advanced.
