Kasatkina bounces back with WTA title

3 minute read

A former world No.10, Daria Kasatkina had fallen on hard times but has bounced back to take out the WTA's Phillip Island Trophy in Melbourne.

Former world No.10 Daria Kasatkina has secured her first title in more than two years, taking out the final of the Phillip Island Trophy.

A two-time grand slam quarter-finalist and rising star of the game back in 2018, the Russian couldn't hold her form and had slipped back to No.75 in the world.

But the 23-year-old was all smiles on Friday when she beat No.13 seed Marie Bouzkova 4-6 6-2 6-2 to capture her third title.

"Feels incredible, to be honest," she told the WTA.

"I felt like one big backpack with stones got out from my shoulders."

After losing the first set, Kasatkina lifted her play in the second and put the foot down as Bouzkova began to tire.

The Czech had won a marathon three-setter against Bianca Andreescu on Thursday and appeared to pick up an injury.

She called for a trainer midway through the set and Kasatkina took full advantage, pushing her around the court.

The last two sets came comfortably with Kasatkina scoring two breaks in each to seal the result.

"I was struggling with a lot of things," Kasatkina said of her drop down the rankings from 2019.

"With my game. Mentally I was having problems, like I was not confident in myself.

"I was losing matches and everything was just going like a snowball all ... things were just going down. It took a lot of time to rebuild my game, to rebuild my confidence, to change myself. Finally I'm feeling good."

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
