Defending champion Ash Barty has been handed a tough draw at the Adelaide International, with an Australian Open semi-finalist and French Open champion looming in her first two matches.

Barty, who took up a wildcard in Adelaide after being taking out at the quarter-final stage at Melbourne Park, will have a first-round bye.

Things look like quickly getting pretty tough from there.

Danielle Collins, a 2019 Australian Open semi-finalist, looks a likely second-round opponent for Barty.

The American pushed her to a third-set tiebreaker at the semi-final stage in Adelaide last year.

French Open champion Iga Swiatek, the fifth seed, is a potential quarter-final opponent.

Swiatek has drawn a qualifier to start and is slated to either play wildcard Sam Stosur or another qualifier in the second round.

On the other side of the draw, second seed Belinda Benic also has a bye before a potential match-up with Anna Blinkova.

Australians Stosur, Ajla Tomljanovic and Olivia Gadecki all took wildcards to play the event.

Stosur and Tomljanovic both play qualifiers to start their campaigns will Gadecki takes on Qiang Wang in round one.
