Jordan Thompson has emerged victorious after three tough sets to advance to the last 32 of the ATP's Barcelona Open.

The Australian overcame a gallant challenge from veteran Frenchman Richard Gasquet before triumphing 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 7-6 (7-3) on Tuesday.

Thompson fired 10 aces in the evenly-matched contest, winning 127 points overall to Gasquet's 123.

The world No.59, who broke the Frenchman twice, will next meet Spain's No.6 seed Pablo Carreno Busta, who received a bye.

Compatriot and No.14 seed Alex de Minaur also received a bye and he will face the winner of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Alexander Bublik for a place in the next round.

Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas are on opposite ends of the draw as the top seeds of the tournament.
