John Millman is the first player through to the quarter-finals of the BMW Open in Munich.

The Australian No.2 advanced after opponent Guido Pella retired just two games into the second set, after the Argentine won the first 6-4.

Millman now awaits the winner of Pablo Cuevas and Casper Ruud for a place in the last four.

Pella's retirement was a huge blessing for the No.8 seed from Brisbane, who was involved in a three-set marathon with countryman Alexei Popyrin in the first round.

Millman triumphed 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 7-5 in that battle which lasted nearly three hours.

The world No.40 is searching for just his second ATP title after beating Adrian Mannarino to win the Astana Open in November.

World No.6 Alexander Zverev is the top seed and vying for his third BMW Open title in Munich.
